An inmate in La Vega jail has died of what is thought to be cholera and other inmates are reported to be suffering from diarrhea.
The victim was Wilson Quezada Delgado from Constanza who was serving a sentence for violating the children’s rights law.
Regional Public Health director Freddy Abad Fabian told journalists that an army officer who was working at the jail was also in hospital in La Vega with diarrhea.
After relatives of the inmates warned that several others had cholera symptoms, the authorities started an operation aimed at preventing the disease from spreading and are separating those affected from the rest of the jail.
