USA and Cuba win Beach Volleyball in Punta Cana

Team USA team with Traci Weamer and Kendra Vanzwieten won the women’s gold medal of the Punta Cana Beach Volleyball Tournament with a come-from-behind victory (17-21, 21-16, 16-11) over Cuba’s Yanileydis Sanchez and Lidianny Echevarria on Sunday, 28 June 2015, Norceca reported.

“This is my very last tournament and it is good to go out with a win,” Weamer said just before the award ceremony. “I loved playing with Kendra as she is very easy to play with. I am also proud of my team and about representing my country.”

It was the second gold medal for Weamer in the history of the NORCECA Circuit as she won the Saint Lucia title in 2012 playing with Kathryn Babcock. That same year she also won a silver medal with Tealle Hunkus in Trinidad & Tobago.

In the men’s division, Cuba’s Karell Pina and Daisel Quesada pulled a convincing 2-0 (21-16, 21-18) victory against Canada’s Garrett May and Daniel Dearing in the men’s gold medal match of the Punta Cana Beach Volleyball Tournament, the second stop of the 2015 Norceca Circuit.

The veteran Pina combined with the young Quesada to win their six matches over the weekend nthree in pool play and three in the knock-out round.

“It is a great feeling and very important to win after almost two years,” said Pina following the award ceremony. “I am comfortable playing with Daisel as new partner, a good player who represents the future of Cuban beach volleyball.
