The head of the National Police, Major General Nelson Peguero Paredes, met with the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court yesterday, Monday, 10 August, 2015, to clarify concerns that the judiciary system is allowing criminals to be freed too easily. Former Chief of Police, Major General Manuel Castro Castillo, had complained shortly before he was removed from the position, that the Police did their job, but the criminals who were turned over to the judiciary for prosecution were allowed right back on the streets to commit similar crimes.
Peguero Paredes reportedly said to Mariano German Mejia that criminals should be in jail and not on the streets. He cited the recent case of those implicated in the attack on Banco Popular in Luperon Avenue where many of those arrested were repeat offenders who had cases still pending in Dominican courts.
Peguero Parades said that in his brief meeting with German Mejia he stressed that he wants the country to be a safe place for all citizens.
Speaking about the recent mugging of the former Minister of Public Works, Victor Diaz Rua, when leaving a restaurant, police spokesman, General Maximo Baez Aybar, said he could not give details of the investigation but that the 911 video camera system had helped to identify those responsible.
