Hundreds of sugarcane workers have demonstrated outside the Haitian Embassy demanding that the Haitian authorities issue their identity documents that were requested between November 2014 and May of this year.
The protestors were frustrated that the Haitian government had not issued identity cards and birth certificates as promised.
Jesus Nunez, representing the cane workers, reiterated his complaint that the Haitian government had caused the problems with the National Foreigner Legalization Plan (PNRE) that expired on 17 June 2015 as the Haitian officials have been slow to process and issue the needed documents.
Nunez said that now that the Dominican government had regularized their status they hoped that Haiti would issue their documents for which the applicants had paid millions of pesos for. He demanded that the applicants be afforded rights as Haitian citizens.
He said that once the sugarcane workers have their identity documents they can qualify for pensions from the Dominican government and vote in the Haitian presidential election that is scheduled to take place in October this year.
