Danny fades while Erika develops

Tropical Storm Danny weakened as it headed into the Caribbean Sea and by yesterday, Monday 24 August 2015 it was downgraded to a low-pressure system, according to the United States National Hurricane Center (NHC). It was the first major hurricane of the season. In the Dominican Republic, the National Meteorological Office (Onamet) is forecasting moderate rains nationwide as of Tuesday afternoon, 25 August 2015. This rainfall is desperately needed to irrigate farmlands and replenish potable water supplies.

Following on a similar path, nevertheless, a new storm, named Erika has developed with 75 kph winds moving westward at 31 km. Tropical storm watches have already been issued for the islands of Montserrat, Antigua, Barbuda, St. Kitts and Nevis, Aguilla, Saba and St. Eustatius in the eastern Caribbean.

The storm is moving westwards on a path that could affect the Dominican Republic. Its current track shows it could pass north of Punta Cana and Puerto Plata on Friday, 28 August 2015, and could achieve hurricane status afterwards.
