The Ministry of Education has accepted criticism from historian Manuel Nunez who said that the 6th grade social sciences textbook used in public schools distorted the facts and led students to believe Dominican Republic was a racist country. Minister Carlos Amarante Baret said the book would be replaced by a newer version.
The Ministry of Education announced plans for signing an agreement with the Dominican Academy of History, which will appoint a commission to advise the Ministry on the selection of new history textbooks.
The minister said that similar agreements are being signed with the Dominican Academy of Language and the Academy of Sciences.
He said before the year is over a tender would be held for the publication of revised elementary school books.
The book has been used since 2006, as reported in Diario Libre. Former Minister of Education Ivelisse Prats has asked why there had been no comment on this issue from the Dominican Teachers Association.
