Motorcycle accidents on the rise

While the Mejia administration, now in its final campaign stretch, has made promises to distribute 100,000 Taiwan-made motorcycles to Dominicans in exchange their votes, El Caribe newspaper reports today that the Dr Dario Contreras Hospital alone, during the first four months of the year, attended 2,565 motorcyclists who had suffered traffic accidents. This is 454 more cases than during the same period in 2003 and 691 more cases than those caused by automobile collisions, which numbered 1,874 during the same period. Motorcycles are the leading cause of road accidents in the DR. Of the 2,097,164 motorized vehicles licensed, 1,170,378 are motorcycles, according to the National Statistics Office.
