Explanation demanded

Participacion Ciudadana, the civic movement that has over 6,000 voluntary observers registered for the 16 May election, stated that the Central Electoral Board (JCE) must clarify why there was an order to print a voting list for the PRD at midnight of Monday, 11 May ? five days before the presidential election ? and who gave it. The irregular printing violates electoral board rulings and was issued without the consent of the plenary of the JCE that had already provided the leading political parties with a copy of the official voters? list.

Monsignor Agripino Nunez Collado, who presides over the electoral board follow-up commission, was very critical of the irregular printing. ?This is regrettable, because it is evident there are strong interests involved, outside of the Central Electoral Board and perhaps with branches inside the Board, that seek to damage the process,? he said, as reported in El Dia newspaper.

The printing was aborted at 1:30am on Tuesday after Participacion Ciudadana, PLD and PRSC delegates were alerted and appeared at the JCE premises shortly thereafter.
