Electoral trivia

A reported 2,521,601 women and 2,499,102 men have registered to vote at the 12,203 voting stations on Sunday, 16 May. The polls open at 6am and close at 6pm.

Of the total eligible voters, 372,865 will be voting for the first time. Voters aged 18-25 years old account for 799,014 individuals. Those 25-40 years old number 2,089,946, while those older than 40 number 2,131,743.

These numbers include the 52,440 Dominicans registered to vote from abroad at the 101 polling stations located in Boston, Montreal, Tampa, Orlando, New York, New Jersey, Caracas, San Juan, Madrid and Barcelona.

The Central Electoral Board recognized 28 political organizations, but the three leading parties ? PRD, PLD and PRSC ? are expected to receive about 99% of the votes. Each political party has the right to a delegate and a substitute delegate, meaning about 24,406 delegates could be involved in this election. The staff working in the effort comprises more than 60,000 people.

To win the election, a candidate needs to receive 50% of the vote +1, or a second round will be called for 30 June.

The Mejia government has declared a long holiday weekend for this election, beginning at 12pm on Saturday, 15 May until 6pm on Monday, 17 May.

According to the program of the Central Electoral Board, the official results should be released on Tuesday, 18 May. Parties may impugn these results as of 20 May, and by 25 May, the JCE must make a ruling. Parties have until 4 June to appeal the any challenge of the results.

If a second round is necessary, it will be ordered on 7 June and voting would be held on 30 June.
