The Amber Cove Cruise Center in Maimon Bay, Puerto Plata province welcomed its very first cruise ship at exactly 6:05am on Tuesday, 6 October 2015. The Carnival Victory with 2,738 passengers on board and 1,100 crewmembers arrived some two hours earlier than scheduled but brought most welcome tourists to Puerto Plata. Cruise ships had not visited Puerto Plata in 30 years.
The state security forces have been very active during the week to ensure the safety of the arriving passengers and crew and some 450 tourist police (CESTUR) and Metropolitan Transport Authority (AMET) agents have been posted in Maimon, Villa Isabela, Luperon, Puerto Plata, Sosua and Cabarete.
The official inauguration of the port has been scheduled for 2 November 2015.
