The president of the PRD, which was the main opposition party in the 2012 presidential election, is now rallying behind President Danilo Medina. At a party meeting held in Los Alcarrizos in northern Santo Domingo yesterday, Thursday 15 October 2015, Miguel Vargas Maldonado assured that President Danilo Medina’s re-election was guaranteed and that he will receive ample support from the PRD throughout the country. Maldonado declared that he was sure that the PRD-PLD coalition would sweep the next election. He said that the rally in Los Alcarrizos would be followed by another campaign event in Santiago this Sunday, 18 October 2015 as the PRD embarks on what Maldonado called “the triumphant tour of the nation.”
Miguel Vargas agreed to drop his bid for President on the PRD ticket when he signed a political alliance with the PLD. At the time, polls showed that voters’ support for the PRD under his leadership had fallen below the level needed to maintain the party’s official status with the Central Electoral Board (JCE).
