Five minority groups belonging to the Alianza Electoral para el Cambio Democratico (Electoral Alliance for Democratic Change) proclaimed Guillermo Moreno as their presidential candidate for the 2016 general election at the Mauricio Baez Club in Santo Domingo yesterday, Sunday 18 October 2015. The organizations are Patria para Todos y Todas, Fuerza de la Revolucion, Camina RD and Propuesta Institucional Cristiana as well as Moreno’s own party Alianza Pais. They announced that they would work together to rid the country of what they called the “purple plague” that the PLD has represented for the state and Dominican people.
“So it turns out that after 50 years when three parties have alternated in power, progress in democracy and social justice has been very limited and many of the country’s problems remain unsolved. Clearly these three players, now allies, rather than part of the solution to the problems have become part of the problem that needs to be solved,” said Moreno, after being proclaimed presidential candidate.
In his proposals, Moreno is pledging to increase government employees’ wages, to reduce the wages of highly paid government employees, to transform the Police, audit the public debt, guarantee 10% to city governments and eliminate the legislators’ so-called “little barrel” or slush fund.
