Businesses in the northern province of Puerto Plata are helping make more fresh fish and shrimp available to the north coast. They have come together as the Copeyito Cooperative. President Danilo Medina visited in April 2015 and expressed his support for the venture that is converting rice fields into shrimp and fish farms.
One of the companies is Value Aquaculture, a German investment based in Cabarete, Puerto Plata. It is producing Caribbean Sutchi (Pangasius Hypophthalmus), a white fish at its farm in Arroyo Sabana. Production is expected to reach 300 metric tons in 2015 and 1,500 metric tons by 2017.
