The National Drug Control Agency (DNCD) has announced the seizure of 626 packages of cocaine in a joint operation with the Dominican Armada (ARD) and the US Coast Guard service 60 nautical miles off the south east coast of the Dominican Republic. The drugs were confiscated on a speedboat with 200-horsepower engines each near Saona Island. The DNCD says that part of the consignment was thrown overboard by the crewmembers, who later ran the boat aground and made a run for land. Only one was arrested by the authorities.
The DNCD believes that a drug network with links to South America was responsible for the shipment, which was being sent to either the United States or Europe.
