While New York City is still the largest community of Dominicans abroad, El Diario NY reports that thousands of Dominicans have now relocated to urban and suburban areas of New Jersey and Florida.
Ramona Hernandez, Director of the CUNY Dominican Studies Institute, says that New York continues to be the main point of entry for Dominicans, accounting for 51% of new arrivals. But she explains that now there are more Dominicans leaving the The Big Apple for other places in the United States than those arriving to New York City to stay. She says Dominicans are now showing a preference for settling in communities in Florida and New Jersey.
Hernandez based her observations on the most recent census in preparation for the publication of a research paper entitled, “Old Places, New Places: Geographic Mobility of Dominicans in the United States”. She explained the relocation of Dominican ex-patriots has been spurred by the lower cost of housing in areas outside of New York City. Hernandez also highlighted that Dominicans are increasingly relocating to places such as South Carolina, which currently have very small populations of Dominicans.
The study reports that Dominican population in the US has surged in recent years, increasing 51% from 2000 to 2010 and has eclipsed 1.5 million people.
Hernandez said it is almost as if Dominicans were following in the footsteps of Puerto Ricans that have also been relocating within the continental US in record numbers.
From 2001 to 2011, new Dominican migration in the US has been concentrated in:
Florida: 63,200
Nueva Jersey: 49,194
Nueva York: 45,908
Pennsylvania 34,057
Massachusetts 23,129
By age, Dominican migration is broken down as:
Under 18 years: 34.4%
Between 18 and 24 years: 13.7%
Between 25 and 34 years: 16.1%
Between 35 and 44 years: 13.7%
Between 45 and 54 years: 9.0%
The findings were presented in a 27 October 2015 Dean’s Pro Seminar “Old Places, New Places: Geographic Mobility of Dominicans in the U.S.” at the Colin Powell School for Civic and Global Leadership.
