Diario Libre comments that several senators have received requests to ?volunteer? their positions to members of the PPH faction of President Hipolito Mejia?s PRD administration. The speculation is that these Mejia government officers expect to be brought to justice. Legislators can only be tried by the Supreme Court of Justice. One legislator from La Vega has kept out of jail, despite evidence he was involved in trafficking with Chinese aliens through the border with Haiti while he was a deputy consul there.
There is even talk that Santiago?s Senator Victor Mendez would resign in order to defer his post to President Hipolito Mejia himself. To complete the move, Mejia would be voted in as president of the Senate ? something that could be easily done with Mejia?s PRD party in control of the Senate body.
Adriano Miguel Tejada, writing for Diario Libre, reflects that this perverse move would seek to close out the game on the new government because ?everyone knows that relations between President-elect Fernandez and Mejia are not the most harmonious.? Likewise, he reports that the PRD senator-elect for El Seibo, Roberto Rodriguez, who ceded the position he won in the 2002 election to become the director of the National Institute of Potable Water (INAPA), now wants his senatorial seat back.
