Is the PRSC-PLD alliance on or off?

Legislators from the ruling PLD party are calling on the PRSC to rethink the party’s decision to break off talks about a possible alliance between the two parties.

According to a press release, senators Prim Pujals and Rafael Calderon have said that while they respect the PRSC president’s decision, politically speaking it was not an intelligent move. Pujals, senator for Samana province said that there was room for an agreement and that the alliance should continue and it would be in the best interests of the party.

Meanwhile, PLD general secretary Reinaldo Pared Perez says that the party is ready to overcome whatever obstacles necessary in order to save the alliance with the PRSC for the 15 May 2016 elections.

He said that as a demonstration of their willingness to reach an agreement he would send the PRSC leadership a list of the places where they would have a single candidate and where each would have their own.

PRSC general secretary Rogelio Genao had said that negotiations were broken off as the PLD had announced their own mayoral candidates who had been previously agreed to be reserved for the PRSC.

News media are reporting that the PRSC is now seeking an agreement with the PRM.

The PRSC has been a strong ally of the PLD ever since its party leader, the late President Joaquin Balaguer, gave former President Leonel Fernandez the support he needed to win the 1996 presidential election.
