Holding up signs saying, “if we are dying, if we go there, in the hospital there is nothing,” the nurses’ union at the Jose Maria Cabral and Baez Hospital in Santiago has gone on strike demanding the Public Health authorities solve the problems.
The nurses say that the leading hospital in the Cibao region does not even have basic and essential medicines and they practically have to work in debris.
Union leader Silvano Geraldino said that they could not even walk along the corridors let alone look after the patients, as the halls were full of wood, plastic chairs, broken stretchers and other garbage.
He warned that the strike would continue and may even spread to more hospitals unless the Ministry of Public Health authorities listen to their demands.
