US Ambassador responds to Cardinal’s remarks

Interviewed by Huchi Lora on El Dia con Channel 11 together with his husband Bob Satawake yesterday, Thursday 3 December 2015, US Ambassador James Brewster said that the comments by Cardinal Nicolas Lopez Rodriguez were mere “noise.” The Cardinal had stated: “That man needs to go back to his embassy,” he said. “Let him focus on housework, since he’s the wife of a man.”

The 79-year old Cardinal had commented that the US Ambassador should go and tend to his house, in response to his criticism of local corruption and his remarks that Dominicans who were not in agreement should turn in their visas.

“That is noise and we do not pay attention to noise, but to truly important topics. Hate and discrimination takes many forms, but when you marginalize groups and minimize their values and their possibility of expressing themselves, you are only perpetuating discrimination,” he said on the TV talk show.

He reaffirmed his criticism of local corruption, which was a key point in his recent American Chamber of Commerce luncheon address. “It is not always popular to have to discuss pending matters,” he observed.

Satawake pointed out that he and Brewster supported laws that protect human rights, regardless of race, gender or sexual orientation.

The Cardinal has been critical of Brewster for what he considers his promotion of a gay rights agenda on Dominican soil.
