Constitutional Tribunal orders release of Segna data

In a decision hailed as a major step in favor of the press, the Constitutional Tribunal ordered the Superintendence of Insurance and its director Euclides Gutierrez to provide the documents requested by Diario Libre on 2 August 2013. The Superintendence had refused to do so.

Diario Libre had argued that data provided by the institution upon their request was incomplete and not up to date in violation of Law 200-04 on Free Access to Public Information. The Constitutional Tribunal ruled that the Superintendence deliver information on the liquidation of the closed down Banco Nacional de Credito and its Segna insurance affiliate that have been requested. Of special interest is the cancellation of the certificates for RD$52 billion that were deposited in the Banco de Reservas and their eventual use by the Superintendence of Insurance.
