Researchers find descendants of Maximo Gomez in Honduras

After many months of work, researchers from the Dominican Embassy in Honduras have found direct descendants of General Maximo Gomez, a national hero in both the Dominican Republic and Cuba, in the city of San Pedro Sula on the north coast of Honduras, as reported in Diario Libre. Maximo Gomez is the father of Cuban independence from Spain.

The general’s great grandson, Anzoni Gomez, lives in San Pedro Sula with his family. The Dominican military leader lived in the city at the end of the 19th century, administering the country’s main port, where several of his children were born.

During his meeting with the family, the Dominican ambassador in Honduras, Jose Osvaldo Leger said that: “This is a very important event. Relations between Honduras and the Dominican Republic begin with the presence of Maximo Gomez in this beautiful country where the military leader raised part of his family and lived in San Pedro Sula.”

Gomez said that he and his family appreciated the interest shown by the Dominican Embassy and that he was anxious to visit the country and the city of Bani where his ancestor, Maximo Gomez, known as the “the Napoleon of the Guerrillas” was born.

Dominican-born Maximo Gomez was Cuba’s military commander in its War of Independence from Spain (1895-1898).

His great-great granddaughter, Daniela Gomez told ambassador Leger that she spends a lot of time on social networks explaining that her great-great-grandfather was Dominican and not Cuban as many young people think. She also said she wanted to visit her great-great-grandfather’s birthplace. Maximo Gomez arrived in Honduras in 1879 at the invitation of President Marco Aurelio Soto, who ratified his rank of general. Gomez helped set up the Honduran army before returning to Cuba in 1895 where he led the Cuban forces in their fight for independence. He died in Havana in 1905.
