President Danilo Medina traveled to San Salvador on Friday, 18 December 2015 to attend the 46th Ordinary Summit of Heads of State and Government of the Central American Integration System (SICA). The event brought together the presidents of Central America and the Dominican Republic. Medina also passed on the temporary presidency of SICA to Honduras.
During the summit, the presidents signed the Antiguo Cuscatlan Statement, condemning terrorism and rejecting violence.
President Medina returned late Friday night.
The event was marked by Costa Rica’s resignation from political participation in SICA, after the organization rejected the country’s request to discuss the issue of Cubans who were migrating to Costa Rica en route to the United States. The President said that the decision would not affect economic and trade matters, only Costa Rica’s participation in the SICA meetings, on the grounds that the body was meant to resolve disputes between member states. Costa Rica wanted the meeting to discuss the problem of the 5,000 US-bound Cuban migrants who are stuck in Costa Rica, but was not able to put the issue on the summit agenda.
