President Danilo Medina has declared 2016 the Year of Housing Development. In Decree 389-15 issued at the end of 2015 he made the announcement as 2016 opens as an electoral year and lack of housing is one of the country’s major deficits.
Luis Lora, president of the Housing Developers and Builders Association in the Cibao region (APROCOVICI), says that according to their research, the Dominican Republic has a deficit of around a million homes. He said that he was grateful to the government for declaring 2016 the “Year of Housing Development,” which he believes will boost the housing construction and decrease the deficit.
Lora said that 2016 should be the year when opportunities are given to all Dominicans who do not own their home.
