A total of 15,754 Haitians who were living in the Dominican Republic illegally have been repatriated since August 2015, according to the Migration Agency (DGM). The DGM says that since June, 113,320 Haitian nationals have voluntarily left Dominican territory, many making use of the transport and food laid on by the National Foreigner Legalization Plan (PNRE) that expired last year.
From 14 August 2015 and 10 January 2016, the DGM says that 54 Cubans, 15,754 Haitians and 55 people of other nationalities were also repatriated. The total breaks down to 15,082 men and 779 women. The other nationalities included nationals of Albania, Czech Republic, Belgium, Bolivia, China, Colombia, Georgia, Germany, the Netherlands, India, Iraq, Kosovo, Mexico, Nicaragua, Peru, Spain, Syria, Ukraine and Venezuela. During the same period a further 7,817 foreigners were refused entry to the Dominican Republic “because they did not have the required documentation” according to a source at Migration. According to the DGM, between 18 June 2015 and 5 January 2016 the areas along the Haitian border saw 59,969 men, 30,065 women and 23,286 children voluntarily leaving the country after receiving assistance from Migration, which provided free transportation, food and medical assistance. Of this total, most left the country through the Dajabon border crossing followed by Elias Pina, Jimani and Pedernales.
