JCE president Roberto Rosario has told El Caribe reporters that so far the voter registration rolls comprise 6,706,416 voters and have shown a growth of 3.13% (203,448 more voters) against the registration rolls used in the 2012 elections that contained 6,502,968 voters. Voters are divided into 3,410,723 men (50.86%) and 3,295,693 (49.14%) women.
The deadline for registering for the ID and voting card is tomorrow, Friday, 15 January 2016. The cedula is needed for voting in the 15 May 2016 general election and for residents to carry out formal transactions in the Dominican Republic. Rosario said the political parties running in the general elections would receive the general list of voters 15 days after the close of voter registration, or no later than 31 January 2016.
As of 11 January 2016, the total number of eligible voters abroad was 342,212, compared to 328,649 in 2012, or a 4.13% increase.
As of 12 January 2016, 6,906,683 Dominicans had obtained their new cedula. This total includes minors between the ages of 16-18 and others who are ineligible to vote for various reasons.
