In a joint operation between the Dominican Armada (Navy) and the National Drug Control Agency (DNCD) a boat with neither name nor registration and suspected of illegal trafficking of either people or drugs, was chased and apprehended. One person died and another five were arrested during the operation, which took place two miles to the southeast of Bayahibe and began at dawn on Sunday 17 January 2016 and ended at around 11am.
During the chase there was what was described as an “incident” when a member of the Armada used his service weapon and a person was killed. The Armada expressed regret at the incident and said that the agent who fired the weapon was being investigated.
