The Dominican Republic continues to rank high on the Transparency International Corruption Perceptions Index, based on expert opinions of public sector corruption. The country’s poor score is a sign of prevalent bribery, lack of punishment for corruption and public institutions that don’t respond to citizens’ needs, according to the TI methodology for the index.
The DR is ranked 103rd on a list of 167 countries. The country reached a score of 33 points of 100 points for the most transparent and least corrupt countries. This is up from 32 points in 2015.
The organizational secretary of the ruling PLD party in the Dominican Republic, senator Felix Bautista has made the final list of the most corrupt individuals in the world published by Transparency International. He is included for “allegedly enriched self with millions in state funds,” and “political connections appear to make him untouchable. In October 2015, the US Embassy confirmed that the senator’s visa had been cancelled.
In Latin America and the Caribbean, countries perceived to be more corrupt than the DR are Argentina (107), Ecuador (107), Honduras (112), Guyana (119), Guatemala (123), Nicaragua (130), Paraguay (130), Haiti (158) and Venezuela (158).
