While President Danilo Medina was at his proclamation event in Santo Domingo on Sunday, 31 January 2016, leading opposition candidate Luis Abinader for the PRM also made headlines with the formal acceptance of the nomination as presidential candidate for the PRSC, this time at the Arena del Cibao. The proclamation was made during an assembly organized by the PRSC in Santiago, presided by PRSC party president, Federico Antun Batlle.
Speaking at the event, Abinader praised the PRSC for breaking with the three-term alliance with the ruling PLD. “This alliance will send a definite blow to the corruption, impunity and lack of citizen safety that President Danilo Medina has allowed to take place,” said Abinader. He said the PRM and the PRSC were united with the will to secure change and break the monopoly on power, and to rescue democracy.
At the same time, the PRM announced that former Santiago city mayor Enrique Sued of the PRSC would be their choice as candidate for mayor of Santiago.
