The Dominican Medical Association (CMD) has called a general 24-hour strike in all the country’s public hospitals for tomorrow, Wednesday 10 February 2016.
The announcement was made by CMD president Waldo Ariel Suero who said that the strike was called after the government had refused to discuss their demands, which include assigning the public health sector 5% of GDP to increase wages and pensions.
In reference to mosquito-borne illnesses, Suero said that the problem was not Zika but Dengue as so far this year more than 20 people had died of dengue including seven at the Robert Reid Cabral Children’s Hospital. He criticized the government for not paying enough attention to dengue, and worrying about zika instead, which, as far as he was aware did not lead to deaths in the same way as dengue.
