How will the political parties spend their RD$1.5 billion?

During an interview with Lenis Garcia on her Opiniones TV show on Channel 25 yesterday, Tuesday 9 February 2016, Central Electoral Board (JCE) president Roberto Rosario Marquez said that the RD$1.6 billion allocated to political parties for campaigning for the next general election was a lot of money given the country’s more pressing needs. He observed, nevertheless, that he would rather the cash was in the hands of the parties than in an unstable state with no political parties, adding that a high-cost democracy was preferable to problems caused by lack of governance.

When asked if he would be carrying out audits to monitor where and how the money was being spent, Rosario Marquez replied that Congress has still not approved the Political Parties Bill that would provide the basis for auditing expenditure. Rosario said that at present, only the Controller General of the Republic could audit spending by political parties.
