IACHR “will rewrite the Dominican Constitution”

The president of the Central Electoral Board (JCE) that manages the civil registry, Roberto Rosario has defended the Dominican Republic’s migratory policies in response to a recent report by the Organization of American States (OAS) Inter-American Commission for Human Rights (IACHR), which ordered the Dominican Republic to grant nationality to everyone born in the Dominican Republic, including the individuals who were affected by Constitutional Court ruling 168-13 that confirmed a 2005 Supreme Court ruling on the right to Dominican citizenship. Rosario expressed his concern at what he described as the court’s “activism” against the Dominican Republic, the only country in the Americas that has implemented comprehensive migratory reform. “At the pace they are going, the CIDH will draft our Constitution, laws and rulings and if not, they will come as in 1965,” he stated, referring to the OAS supported invasion of the country in 1965, to counteract a bid to reinstate a constitutionally-elected President.
