Thousands of students reported to classes yesterday, Wednesday 10 February 2016, after professors and staff unions at the state university (UASD) announced they would return to work. The professors had been on strike since the 2015 fall semester ended in November, although they did attend and sign in to receive their pay during the strike.
Diario Libre reports that some professors did not show up for work to the disappointment of their students who are eager to resume classes so as not to lose the semester. The UASD professors, the best paid in the country, were demanding a 40% wage increase. The UASD has authorized a 25% raise in their per diem allowances.
Classes at the UASD, which were scheduled to start on 26 January 2016, are now resuming with a 14-day delay. Rector Ivan Grullon said that adjustments would be made so the semester can conclude successfully.
