VPs need to be determined by 16 March

Although 16 March 2016 is the deadline for political parties to register their vice presidential candidates, most of the parties have not yet done so.

The parties also have to register their alliances by 1 March 2016 (75 days before election day). The JCE has to approve the alliances before 6 March.

El Caribe reports that of 26 political parties authorized to contest the elections, seven minority parties have not announced alliances. Alliances have traditionally been a way of maintaining the parties’ legal status because by piggybacking onto a majority party they are assigned the party’s percentage thus keeping their status.

The minority parties and their presidential candidates are:

Alianza Pais: Guillermo Moreno

Alianza por la Democracia (APD): Minou Tavarez Mirabal

Partido Revolucionario Socialdemocrata (PRSD): Hatuey de Camps

Partido Quisqueyano Democrata Cristiano (PQDC): Elias Wessin Chavez

Partido de Unidad Nacional (PUN): Soraya Aquino

Fuerza Nacional Progresista (FNP): Pelegrin Castillo

Partido Nacional Voluntad Ciudadana (PNVC): Juan Cohen

The ruling PLD party has announced alliances with the Partido Revolucionario Dominicano (PRD), Partido Revolucionario Independiente (PRI), Partido Movimiento Democratico Alternativo (Moda), Bloque Institucional Socialdemocrata (BIS), Union Democrata Cristiano (UDC), Partido de los Trabajadores Dominicanos (PTD), Partido Popular Cristiano (PPC), Partido Democrata Popular (PDP), Partido Civico Renovador (PCR), Partido Liberal de la Republica Dominicana (PLRD), Partido de Accion Liberal (PAL) and Partido Socialista Verde (Pasove). In the past, the party had allied with the PRSC, PUN, FNP and PQDC, but not this year.

The PRM’s allies are the Partido Reformista Social Cristiano (PRSC), Partido Humanista Dominicano (PHD), Dominicanos por el Cambio and Frente Amplio.

A los partidos les quedan 13 días para formalizar las alianzas
