The executive vice president of the Public Electricity Corporation (CDEEE) Ruben Jimenez Bichara has announced that the generator, turbine and complementary equipment of the first unit of the Punta Catalina Thermoelectric Plant, the coal-fired power generator built by the Medina administration, have arrived. He said that the equipment for the second unit is on the way. He said that this equipment makes up 80% of the machinery needed for the plant that is scheduled to enter into operation in the second half of 2017.
The Medina administration is prioritizing the construction of the coal-fired power plants, despite widespread opposition on the grounds that fossil fuel-based power generation is obsolete at a time when the rest of the world is focusing on renewable energy.
