More than 100 former workers from the former Hotel Sol de Plata in Sosua, which was owned by the Abinader family, formed a human chain outside PRM presidential candidate Luis Abinader’s campaign headquarters yesterday, Monday 22 February 2016. They are demanding their liquidation payments that should have been made when the hotel closed in 2009. Workers representatives Andres Ortiz, Francisco Nunez and Wilson Reyes said that they had worked for the company for many years and when it closed its doors they were thrown out onto the streets without receiving severance payments. They say the Abinader family owes money to more than 300 former workers and that the family has violated their rights according to the labor laws.
Ortiz said that the former workers come from Rio San Juan, Sosua, Cabarete and the neighborhoods of Los Bordas, Padre de las Casas and Los Sufridos in Puerto Plata.
He said they have done everything they can to try and claim the money but have been fighting for more than six years with no success.
