The Brazilian courts issued a warrant yesterday, Monday 22 February 2016 for the arrest of Joao Santana, who was the publicist for the Dilma Rousseff and Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva presidential campaigns. He is wanted in his home country to clarify whether the millions of dollars in payments that he received overseas were part of a project linked to the massive Petrobras fraud case. Santana is also a leading advisor to the presidential re-election campaign of President Danilo Medina.
It is thought that Santana and his wife, Monica, who also has a warrant out for her arrest, are currently in the Dominican Republic working on President Danilo Medina’s re-election campaign. Back in 2012, President Danilo Medina thanked Joao Santana for his work on his presidential campaign that led to his election.
Listin Diario reports that Santana has sent a letter to the ruling PLD party’s National Committee saying he had to return to Brazil to defend himself against the accusations of corruption, tax evasion and money laundering linked to Petrobras and hidden payments made outside Brazil by financier Zwi Skornicki and offshore companies controlled by the Odebrecht Group.
