US woman strangled and husband arrested

Yesterday, Tuesday 23 February 2016, a US man was accused of murdering his wife, also from the US, in an apartment in Trade Winds apartments in Sosua, Puerto Plata province.

The victim was 49-year old Sarah Stratton Kershaw, a former New York Times reporter and a freelance contributor to the Washington Post and Miami Herald international edition. The alleged murderer, her 50-year old husband William Paul Norton from Illinois, who is also a journalist, is currently under arrest awaiting a court appearance.

Medical examiner Mario Cesar Lopez issued a preliminary report certifying that Kershaw died from suffocation caused by strangulation and her body has been sent to the Institute of Forensic Science (INACIF) in Santiago for an autopsy.

According to the police, her body was found on her bed with a plastic bag over her face and they initially thought she had committed suicide. There was also an empty bottle of pills and one of alcohol. Her husband stated that she had asked him to move out as she needed more space and he was not in the apartment when the incident occurred.

The authorities are awaiting the autopsy results to shed more light on what actually happened.
