Ground shakes in the east

The eastern region of the Dominican Republic was shaken by a 4.7 magnitude earthquake on the Richter scale yesterday morning, Wednesday 24 February 2016. The quake occurred in the early dawn hours (4:18am). According to reports, it awoke many people across the region and El Nuevo Diario even used the word “panic” to describe the reaction of the local inhabitants.

The Autonomous University of Santo Domingo Seismological Institute reported that the epicenter was 37 km to the northwest of San Pedro do Macoris.

The earthquake was felt at the Las Americas International Airport, as well as in some parts of Santo Domingo and several towns in the eastern region. The USGS website established the magnitude at 4.7 on the Richter scale.
