A cholera outbreak at La Victoria jail has left four inmates dead and 75 suffering from the disease. Prisoners’ families have expressed their concern at the outbreak and on Sunday, 6 March 2016 they were allowed to go to the jail to take them juice and check on their state of health.
By Sunday, six inmates were in the La Victoria municipal hospital and the Public Health Ministry coordinator, Dr. David Pineda, said that the outbreak was now under control.
He said that the 75 who contracted cholera began showing symptoms two weeks ago and in the last week only 19 still have symptoms, of whom 10 are being rehydrated intravenously and nine orally. They will be returned to the jail once they are stable.
