Aura Celeste Fernandez to run for senator

The Alianza Pais (Alpais) political party has announced that former member of the Central Electoral Board (JCE), lawyer Aura Celeste Fernandez, will be the party’s candidate for senator for the National District in the 15 May election. She will run against Cristina Lizardo of the PLD-PRD coalition and Alberto Atallah for the PRM-PRSC coalition. She is married to Guillermo Moreno, who is running for President on the Alpais ticket.

When accepting the nomination yesterday, Tuesday 8 March 2016, Fernandez said if elected she would work as an authentic representative of the community by establishing permanent links to channel their needs and aspirations to the Senate.

Born in San Francisco de Macoris, Fernandez is a public international law and human rights law specialist. She and Moreno have two sons, Abel Guillermo and Juan Domingo.

Before her stint the JCE, she served as a judiciary reform commissioner with ministerial rank and as secretary general of the penitentiary reform commission. She has also served as the director of the school of prosecutors. She has been a university lecturer for 20 years and is the president of the National Council of Health Bioethics.
