Comments in social media and from religious groups have been critical of the US ambassador for visiting schools with his husband, which is interpreted as another attempt by the diplomat to promote gay rights. Ambassador Brewster has given high priority to promoting LGBT events since his arrival as ambassador in 2013.
Speaking in Santiago, Brewster said that he would continue to work in support of education. “We know that the work of an ambassador is always going to receive certain criticism, but we firmly believe in a future based on education,” he said. “We believe that education will train not only the leaders of tomorrow, but also the leaders that young people have already become,” he added, as reported in Diario Libre.
He refused to answer press questions when inaugurating the EducationUSA program at the Centro Cultural Dominico-Americano (CCDA) in Santiago yesterday, Wednesday 9 March 2016.
The US government-backed program operates in 170 countries. During the visit to the bi-cultural center in Santiago, Brewster was accompanied by his husband, Bob Satawake and the CCDA board members.
The program is coordinated by the US Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA). It provides comprehensive information on how to apply to US colleges and universities.
