Evangelicals claim responsibility for petition to remove US ambassador

A petition addressed to United States President Barack Obama, requesting the removal of Ambassador James Brewster, which has caused a stir in social media, is being promoted by the Dominican Council of Evangelical Unity (CODUE).

Interviewed in Santo Domingo yesterday, Wednesday, 9 March 2016, the Council said that the diplomat had broken Dominican laws and violated the Constitution through his promotion of his agenda that defends the rights of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transsexual (LGBT) community.

Nearly 20,000 people had already signed the petition by today, Thursday 10 March 2016. 100,000 signatures are needed for the White House to respond. The petition was posted on Tuesday, 8 March 2016.

CODUE president Fidel Lorenzo Meran said: “We are pressuring the US Department of State and through the ambassador of religious affairs of the United States, for a review of the decision to assign Mr. Brewster to the Dominican Republic,” during a radio interview.

A counter-petition in support of the ambassador has also been started. Links to both petitions follow:
