5,000 drones flying in Dominican skies

An estimated 5,000 drones are using Dominican airspace but their owners are not complying with the aviation regulations for these devices. The Dominican Institute of Civil Aviation (IDAC) Flight Operations Department director Pablo Cabrera told Diario Libre that since April when Resolution 008-2015 was issued to regulate the use of drones in Dominican airspace, barely 27 operators have registered at the IDAC. Cabrera said that most of the operators who registered carry out commercial activities, such as filming, or topographical measuring for engineering or agriculture.

Cabrera was speaking to reporters before the start of a seminar on “Drone Operations in the Dominican Republic,” which was held at the APEC University yesterday, Wednesday 9 March 2016 in coordination with the Aeronautical Sciences Academy.

The seminar sought to raise awareness among drone operators and trainee air traffic controllers as well as the general public about the importance using these devices correctly.

IDAC director Alejandro Herrera encouraged drone operators to make the most of the free registration.
