Observation of elections agreed

The Organization of American States (OAS) and the Dominican government signed formal agreements on Monday, 14 March 2016, stating that the OAS will send an electoral observation mission (EOM) to the elections on May 15. The mission will be headed by the former president of Colombia, Andres Pastrana.

This will be the 16th OAS electoral observation mission to the Dominican Republic. The mission will observe the election of the President and Vice President of the country, 32 senators, 190 deputies, 20 representatives to the Central American Parliament, 158 mayors and deputy mayors, as well as 1,164 councilors.

The permanent representative at the OAS, Pedro Verges, and the Dominican Republic’s Central Electoral Board (JCE) president, Roberto Rosario, signed the agreement on the privileges and immunities of observers, as well as the agreement on observation procedures, which provides the EOM’s members full access to the electoral bodies and to the necessary information for the performance of their duties.
