President Danilo Medina has instructed government employees who are standing as candidates in the forthcoming general election to take a leave of absence from their jobs until the 15 May 2016 elections are over.
He has also said that no temporary personnel may be employed in public administration posts, whether central or regional, again until the day after the elections. Those who have already been appointed and budgeted for may begin their jobs.
The measures were announced by the office of the Minister of the Presidency, Gustavo Montalvo. Montalvo said this was a proactive measure to guarantee equality of opportunities and transparency during the election process.
Political scientist Rafael Toribio, interviewed by Diario Libre, says that all that has been done is for the government to accept what is written in the Electoral Law.
