Better known for his mobster-style work as president of the truckers’ association (Fenatrado), Blas Peralta’s bid to impose his style on politics has been cut short. Yesterday, Wednesday 16 March 2016, judge Jose Alejandro Vargas of the National District sent the transporters’ leader to the Cucama Correction and Rehabilitation Center in La Romana to await trial for the murder of former UASD rector Mateo Aquino Febrillet. The judge also ordered pre-trial custody for Peralta’s head of security, former colonel Rafael Herrera Pena, and Franklin Vanegas and Geraldo Felix Batista. The decision was taken after transcripts of a recorded telephone conversation showed that the suspects were planning to use their influence on the Police and judiciary to tamper with the evidence in the case. The evidence includes videos by 911 surveillance cameras as well as the recordings of the men’s telephone conversations.
The judge pointed out that the government has been very lenient with certain citizens who have come to believe they are untouchable by Justice.
During the hearing, Peralta maintained his innocence.
