President Medina visits Pedernales

On the campaign trail in the southwestern province of Pedernales yesterday, Thursday 17 March 2016, President Danilo Medina announced several tourism developments for the area but made them conditional on a PLD win in the municipal, legislative and presidential general election of 15 May 2016.

During a formal event where he pledged his support for PLD senator Dionis Sanchez, who is seeking to be re-elected senator for the province, Medina also campaigned for all the candidates in the Bloque Progresista, the alliance between the PLD and the PRD, and other parties. He encouraged his supporters to “look for votes even under stones.” Medina said that in order to implement his development plans he will need the support of Congress. The PLD has held the majority in Congress during his current term of office. He urged the voters of Pedernales to give the PLD alliance candidates their full support.

He promised good times ahead for Pedernales, mentioning plans for a seafront boulevard, an area for fishermen, the refurbishment of the Cabo Rojo airport, and the construction of a new aqueduct and a sewage treatment plant. The President said work would begin in two months.

Medina also announced that the Cementos Andinos plant had been purchased by leading Dominican businessman Pepin Corripio. He said Corripio has promised to pay severance payment to all workers in the first week of April. Medina said the factory, which employs around 700 people, would continue operating.
