The Dominican Republic general election is scheduled for 15 May 2016. A total of 24,442 candidates will be trying to convince 6,765,136 eligible voters that they are the right people for one of 4,106 elective posts for the Presidency, legislative branch and city governments.
The campaign will now continue through 13 May 2016, after which Dominicans are given two days to assess their decision before voting on the 15th.
This time, 26 political parties and seven political movements at the local level are participating. According to leading polls, most of the vote will be shared between the ruling Partido de la Liberacion Dominicana (PLD) and the opposition Partido Revolucionario Moderno (PRM) and their allies, followed by Alianza Pais, which seeks to become a third political force in the country.
El Caribe reports that the next important PLD event will take place tomorrow, Tuesday, 29 March 2016 at the Centro de Convenciones Sans Souci in Santo Domingo East where key party figures and delegates from all around the country are scheduled to meet for the final phase of the campaign. Former President Leonel Fernandez is expected to play a more prominent role in the final push for President Danilo Medina’s re-election.
The PRM resumes its events with the return of presidential candidate Luis Abinader from a visit to the US. The PRM reports that the sections headed by Hipolito Mejia, Andres Bautista and Federico Antun Batlle, president of the allied Partido Reformista Social Cristiano (PRSC), are heading the campaign nationwide.

Partido de Unidad Nacional: Soraya Aquino and Pedro Corporan
Alianza por la Democracia: Minou Tavarez Mirabal and Mario Berges
There are 1,540 candidates for Congress, including 1,316 running for deputy seats and 224 for the Senate.
At the city government level, there are 22,514 candidates including 965 running for mayor.
