Community groups in Moca and Licey al Medio declared a 48-hour strike yesterday, Tuesday 29 March 2016 asking central government to carry out a series of works.
Richard Tejeda, Griselda Torres and Manuel Collado, representing the Popular Front (FALPO) protest group, said that they were calling on the authorities to repair the roads, provide drinking water, improve electricity supplies, and build a polyclinic, a sports court and a children’s park.
Collado said that Public Works Minister Gonzalo Castillo had visited the area four years ago and announced the reconstruction of the main road in the El Peru sector, which was to be five kilometers long and had never been started.
The protestors have been burning tires and blocking the roads including cutting down hundred-year-old trees. A heavily armed police and military presence is on the scene. http://www.diariolibre.com/noticias/sucesos/comunidades-mocanas-inician-huelga-de-48-horas-en-demanda-de-obras-CN3179073
