The Universidad Iberoamericano, one of Santo Domingo’s leading private universities, has announced the opening of the Instituto de Medicina Tropical y Salud Global, based at the university’s facilities at the Hospital Escuela Dr. Jorge Abraham Hazoury Bahles in Santo Domingo.
As reported, the institute will prioritize research on emerging tropical diseases, infectious diseases, chronic illnesses and mental health. Advanced study programs in tropical medicine and health sciences research will also be part of the center’s work.
Support for the new institute was received from the Instrumental Access program run by Seeding Labs, a US-based non-governmental organization.
Unibe was one of 16 institutions worldwide chosen to receive support from the NGO. The funding application was coordinated by Dr. Robert Paulino, a graduate of the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, who will be the director of the new institute.
